Shanghai Salad

 
1 lg head shredded lettuce
2 16 oz cans bean sprouts well drained
2 coarsely chopped green peppers
2 5 oz cans water chestnuts sliced
1/2 c toasted almonds
 
Place all ingredients - except almonds - in a very large bowl.
Just before serving pour dressing over all and toss well - sprinkle almonds over top
Serves 12-15
 
Dressing:
2/3 c mayonnaise
1 tsp prepared mustard
1/2 tsp Tabasco Sauce
1 clove garlic - crushed
1 tsp grated onion
5 Tbsp tarragon vinegar
1 1/2 tsp dried marjoran
1/2 t dried thyme
several grinds fresh pepper
1 tsp salt
2 tsp soy sauce
 
Put Mayo in a bowl and blend in rest of ingredients stirring well.
Transfer to a jar with a tight fitting lid - shake vigorously cover and refrigerate overnight.
Makes 1 cup dressing
